Summer Building Project

We are very pleased to announce that Normanhurst has recently gained planning consent to enlarge some of the classrooms in the main building. As a consequence, over the summer holiday the school builders will be taking part of the roof off three of the main buildings to install three large rear dormers.

The effect of this development will be to enlarge the History and Maths classrooms and to create a new classroom where Mr Christou’s office is currently located. These rooms will be larger and brighter than they are at present and will help improve the teaching facilities in the school.

The building contractor GE & AF Silvester Ltd, who built our ‘new building’ in 2003 and the Studio extension in 2015 have been appointed to complete the work, and who have also been involved with several large projects over the years at all of our schools.

As with most of our projects, this is a very ambitious plan that is weather-dependent and that might need more than the 7 weeks I can give the building contractors. They will be working to a very tight schedule and although the builders will be working six days each week throughout the summer break, there is a risk that the work will not be totally complete by the time we return to school in September. Given the additional benefits that the development will bring, we know that you will agree that this is a risk worth taking.

As happened with the Studio extension in 2015, we anticipate some of the internal finishing to be completed during the first few weeks of term and then during the two week October half term break. Any disruption will, of course, be kept to an absolute minimum whilst school is in session.

The rooms will all be a similar size and we will be taking out one of the two top floor staircases to create even more space after the dormers have been installed. This is an exciting new development that will further enhance our provision, and we are looking forward to the start of the Autumn Term 2017 when we hope to see the new and enlarged rooms in use.
