Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month this year, Normanhurst School invited two aspiring Olympic 2020 athletes to come in and discuss their journey through sport and their inspirations. During in the whole school assembly, we were joined by basketballer Melita Emanuel-Carr, a Silver medallist in the Commonwealth Games, and Will Saunders, a frequent member of the GB international basketball squad with appearances in both their EuroBasket Qualification and World Cup Qualification programmes. They both discussed their journey as basketball players and some of the pioneering black athletes and their impact on our society, lives and culture.

Melita even discussed how she chose the university that she did in Chicago to follow in the footsteps of the first British black basketball player who studied and played in America. To continue our celebrations, the junior children were lucky enough complete some fitness workshops with the athletes and become ‘inspired through sport’. The children enjoyed having this opportunity to work with both Melita and Will and celebrate Black History Month in an alternative way.
